The Laredo Independent School District Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) held their first meeting of the 2026-2027 school year with LISD Superintendent Guillermo Pro. The meeting was hosted by the Martin High School at the LISD Performing Arts Center in the Dr. Marcus Nelson Conference Room.
The students were welcomed by Gerardo Rodriguez, LISD Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Guillermo Pro, LISD Superintendent.
IBC Executive Vice-President Corporate Marketing Gabriel Castillo served as keynote speaker during the meeting. He discussed the importance of financial literacy for high school students. IBC also provided lunch from Chick-Fil-A and some amazing door prizes for our students.
During the meeting students also heard a presentation regarding the Society of Martha Washington Scholarship by LISD Director of Communication, Veronica Castillon.

The LISD Special Education Department recognized special education students with the Champions Award for exceling in the classroom, being responsible, having good attendance, and being eager to learn. Nixon High School hosted the September Champion Awards Fall Carnival Celebration where administration, staff, and parents from Martin, Nixon, Cigarroa High Schools and RISE Academy came together to celebrate and recognize our amazing Champions.

Congratulations to Nixon High School's Ramiro Noe Santiago Padron for being named LISD September Student of the Month. The LISD Student of the Month is sponsored by Laredo Federal Credit Union, Clear Choice ER, Chick-Fil-A Marketplace on Bob Bullock, and Laredo Orthodontics.
Congratulations to Nixon High School senior running back, Diego Hernandez for being named the KGNS Charlie Clark Player of the Week. Diego has five carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns, and one catch for 59 yards and a touchdown in the Mustangs win over the Cigarroa Toros.
Today the Texas Education Agency officially announced that Laredo ISD has earned two A’s. The annual ratings show that LISD earned an A in Academic Accountability with a district score of 90. Overall campus ratings for LISD’s 28 schools include 18 A’s and 10 B’s. No LISD campus earned a C or D. LISD also earned an A in finance through their Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) rating.

SAVE THE DATE! July 21-23. Operation Border Health is scheduled for July 21-23, at the United South 9th Grade campus. Free services will include medical, dental, vision, and mental health services.
The LISD/UISD Driscoll Back to School Health Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at the Sames Auto Arena. School supplies, sports physicals, health screenings, and immunizations will be offered. Don't miss out on the free services and supplies.
Join the Swim Team this summer and attend the Freshmen Swim Camp! Bring your physical (required), sunscreen, water/gatorade, girls (1-piece swim suit), boys (jammers/swim shorts), sandals, and towel. All participants must know how to swim.
Congratulations to Daniel Valdez, Nixon High School Salutatorian, for being awarded the prestigious Gates Scholarship. Daniel will become an Aggie as he will enroll this fall at Texas A&M University in College Station. He will be pursuing a degree in Animal Science and hopefully attend Veterinary School.
The Laredo City Council recognized the Nixon High School BBQ teams, the Nixon High School Girls Track and Field team, and Macdonell Elementary School Principal.
The Nixon High School BBQ teams participated at the UIL HSBBQ State Cook-Off! The Nixon One Trick Pony BBQ finished in a three-way tie for 2nd place, ultimately placing 4th after the tiebreaker. Nixon Iron Horse BBQ also fought hard, tying for 5th and finishing 6th after the tiebreaker.
The Nixon High School Girls Track and Field Team was recognized for winning the District Championship for the third consecutive year.
Macdonell Elementary School Principal Michelle Gonzalez was recognized for recently being selected as the winner of the HEB Excellence Award as the best principal in the state of Texas.

Checkmate! LISD’s named its top chess players after a fierce competition this past Saturday at the LISD PAC in the Dr. Marcus Nelson Conference Center. The LISD Fine Arts Department hosted an All-Star Chess Tournament for the district’s All-Star chess players. The top 10 winners were recognized with either a trophy or medal for their accomplishments.
Laredo ISD recognized its Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year and Clerical and Instructional Paraprofessional of the Year nominees during the district’s Employee of the Year Banquet which was held at the Dr. Marcus Nelson Conference Center.
